Whether you live nearby or are simply following what's happening in Ahwatukee, some useful questions include:

• What has actually been approved?

• How large will the completed project be?

• Are additional phases planned?

• Where will generators and other equipment be located?

• What are the construction hours and truck routes?

• What cooling technology will be used?

• What noise testing has been completed?

• How could traffic patterns change?

For families near the project, even something as ordinary as school pickup and drop-off traffic may be worth considering.

What About Nearby Homes?

Another question being discussed is whether data centers could eventually influence nearby home values or how future buyers perceive the area.

There isn't a simple answer yet.

This Ahwatukee mom does not need every political conversation to turn into a debate. Because somehow, the second we start asking questions, everything turns into an argument these days. Sometimes I just want to understand who is running, what they are paying attention to, and how they are talking about the issues happening right here in our community.

That came up in a recent Kate48 conversation with Anthony Ramirez, who is running for Arizona State Senate in LD12.

Anthony has lived in Ahwatukee for many years, and during our conversation, he brought up a couple of things that are already familiar to many local residents but also some that might not be.


Pay Attention to What Candidates Know About Our Community

One issue Anthony talked about specifically was the Menlo Digital Data Center project near 48th Street between Chandler Boulevard and Ray Road.

He said local voters were the ones who first brought the project to his attention. After learning more about it, he became involved with residents who had concerns and said he volunteered services from his law firm to help them navigate the situation.

For me, that is the kind of thing worth listening for when I talk with any local candidate.

Do they know what is happening in Ahwatukee?

Are they hearing directly from residents?

When someone brings them a concern, what do they do next?

You do not have to agree with a candidate’s position to learn something from the way they answer those questions.


A Few Questions Moms Can Keep in Mind

When I listen to a candidate interview now, I am paying attention to a few simple things:

-What local issues are they talking about?
-Do they understand why residents are concerned?
-Who are they listening to?
-What do they say they would do when they do not have all the answers?

That feels a lot more useful to me than trying to memorize every political term or follow every argument online.

We do not have to become experts in politics. We can simply get curious about the people asking to represent our community.

Preventing and Navigating Snake Encounters Near Phoenix's Wildlife Preserve

What measures can I take to discourage rattlesnakes from entering my property?

Install solid perimeter walls or snake fencing.  Do not leave your garage door open for long periods of time especially overnight.  Be sure that garage doors and all exterior doors are sealed.  Do not use dog doors or, if you do, keep them sealed most of the time.  

• Are there specific landscaping practices or habitat modifications that can reduce the likelihood of rattlesnakes being attracted to my property?

They are attracted to food, water and shelter.  Reduce the amount of water by repairing leaks and regularly maintaining your yard watering system, avoid dense landscaping that is low to the ground and remove what attracts their prey (rabbits, rats, kangaroo rats, etc).

• What should I do if I encounter a rattlesnake on my property?

Leave it alone.  Back away slowly. It would prefer not to strike, don’t give it a reason to.  The striking distance is typically half the length of the snake’s body.  Call a local licensed snake removal service to retrieve it.

• Are there signs or behaviors I should watch for to detect the presence of rattlesnakes nearby?

Stay aware and listen.  The rattle is unmistakable.  Take a flashlight outside at night.

• What steps should I take if someone is bitten by a rattlesnake?

Get them to the hospital as quickly as possible.  They will not make you wait at the hospital. Tell them it’s a rattlesnake bite.  Do not attempt to cut or suck out the poison. Do not put a tourniquet on the victim.  It is important that the victim stay calm to keep the heart rate down as much as possible. 

• What are the typical habits and behaviors of rattlesnakes in this area?

They become very active in April (spring). It’s getting warmer and prey is out feeding on the spring flowers and vegetation. 

• During which times of day or under what conditions are rattlesnakes most active?

Rattlesnakes are nocturnal and are most active at night. During the day, they will typically be under cover.  They become more active when water isn’t readily available in the desert.

Ahwatukee Snakes: A Basic Guide for an Ahwatukee Mom

We are soon coming up on our two-year anniversary in a home that backs the South Mountain Preserve. We have had frequent visits from a variety of members of the wildlife kingdom and most have been welcome. On two occasions so far, we have had unwelcome visitors.

One of those visitors was a Banded Sand Snake. It was very small and came into our basement when the door was left open, we assume. We couldn’t find it for almost two days after we spotted it initially and finally found it in a closet. We are more careful to keep doors closed now especially when the snakes are known to be more active.

The next visitor, just a few weeks later in July of 2022, was a Mojave. My son and husband stumbled upon that one outside with our dog and we are all very lucky that they heard the rattle and they were able to back away. We called a professional to come and remove the large snake from our garden area. That’s when we decided to install snake fencing.

Since we have installed the snake fencing, we haven’t had any other experiences with snakes. We are still careful especially during the parts of the year when they are most active. The striking beauty of the scenery we’ve grown to love and the convenience of the close proximity to the trails far outweigh the inconvenience that we’ve experienced so far. This potential occurrence hasn’t given us any buyers remorse, and from what we hear, it’s truly not that common to run into them. We are just a bit more careful and aware now that we’ve had these experiences.

While some of the snakes on the preserve are harmless, it's essential for Ahwatukee residents, especially parents, to be aware of the species and types of snakes in the area. This knowledge can help ensure the safety of both you and your children when exploring the local outdoors or dealing with what may arrive in your back yard.

Common Snakes found in Ahwatukee:

• Western Diamondback Rattlesnake:

• Poisonous: Yes

• Description: Recognizable by its diamond-shaped pattern and a distinctive rattle on its tail, the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake is the most venomous snake in Ahwatukee.

• Sonoran Coral Snake:

• Poisonous: Yes

• Description: With its striking black, yellow, and red bands, the Sonoran Coral Snake is easily identifiable. It's rarely encountered but should be treated with caution.

• Gopher Snake:

• Poisonous: No

• Description: Gopher Snakes are often confused with rattlesnakes due to their similar appearance but lack rattles. They are harmless and help control rodent populations.

• Coachwhip Snake:

• Poisonous: No

• Description: Coachwhip Snakes are slender, fast-moving snakes with a whip-like appearance. They are non-venomous and primarily feed on small mammals.

While Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes are the most prevalent, it's worth noting that other rattlesnake species can occasionally be found in the region. Some of the other rattlesnake species that may be encountered in the broader Phoenix area, including South Mountain Preserve, include:

• Western Black-tailed Rattlesnake: While less common than the Western Diamondback, you might encounter Western Black-tailed Rattlesnakes in the area. They have a similar appearance but may have a black tail.

• Mojave Rattlesnake: The Mojave Rattlesnake is another venomous species found in parts of Arizona, including the Phoenix area. It has a distinctive white and greenish-yellow coloration.

• Speckled Rattlesnake: Speckled Rattlesnakes are less common in the Phoenix area, but they can be found in some desert habitats.

• Tiger Rattlesnake: Tiger Rattlesnakes are known for their striking striped pattern. They are also found in certain desert regions of Arizona.

Snakebite Prevention:

• Stay Vigilant: When hiking or spending time outdoors, keep an eye out for snakes on the trail, under rocks, or in bushes.

• Wear Appropriate Clothing: Long pants and closed-toed shoes offer some protection against snakebites. Avoid sandals or flip-flops in snake-prone areas.

• Use a Walking Stick: A walking stick can help you probe the ground ahead and deter snakes from getting too close.

• Stay on Marked Trails: Stick to well-traveled paths to minimize the risk of stumbling upon a snake.  Do not go off trail.

• Keep a Safe Distance: If you encounter a snake, maintain a distance of at least six feet and do not attempt to handle it.

What to Do If Bitten:

• Stay Calm: Panic can increase your heart rate and spread venom faster. Try to stay as calm as possible.

• Immobilize the Affected Area: Keep the affected area still and above heart level.  Do not cut the wound, do not apply ice or a tourniquet.

• Remove Constrictive Clothing or Jewelry: Swelling may occur, so remove items like rings or bracelets that could become tight.

• Seek Immediate Medical Attention: Call 911 or head to the nearest hospital. Provide as much information about the snake's appearance as possible.

Ahwatukee's natural beauty is home to a variety of wildlife, including snakes. While some snakes in the area are harmless, it's good to be informed about the potentially venomous ones and take precautions when spending time outdoors.

Brunch Snob Opens in Ahwatukee

Celene and Keith Hillsbery have been in the restaurant business for many years. They just recently opened Brunch Snob on 48th and Elliot Rd in the old Irish Hare building.

Keith is the head chef in and Celene manages the restaurant. All of the food is made from scratch and the brisket is smoked in-house. They make giant cinnamon rolls from scratch and the cocktails are amazing.

It’s a fancy brunch experience without the fancy price. I highly recommend!

It’s Katie, The Ahwatukee Mom, here. We did it again! We bought another beautiful Ahwatukee home, this time in Ahwatukee Custom Estates, that we are going to remodel. We close at the end of October and then it begins.

I went to the gym for a meeting a few weeks ago and I was so surprised with what I found. The gym is a great size allowing space for social distancing and there’s plenty of equipment to get that max benefit out of the classes offered.

Chesapeake Bay Bistro and The Ahwatukee Mom

This fresh, home-style seafood is hard to come by in AZ.  This is why we are so excited to share our latest experience.  While scanning the 411 Ahwatukee Facebook page we saw a discussion about this new restaurant that opened at the Ahwatukee/Tempe border. It was said that they had AH-Mazing crab cakes and seafood.  That was enough information for us to load up the kiddo and set off to find this magical place.  Within 8 minutes, we were there.  Located in the plaza at the southwest corner of Elliot and 51st street, Chesapeake Bay Bistro is clearly visible upon entering the parking lot. 

We felt quite welcome upon entry.  We were greeted with smiles and felt the warm family business vibe radiating towards us…we love this about many Ahwatukee businesses and this one fits right in!  The decor was perfect and represents what you would want from an east coast ocean-side eatery.   The use of repurposed wood, cottage-style trim, and beach colors give a classic boardwalk feel.  They have a wall dedicated to flip flops and customers can write their names on them and/or decorate them. Our 7-year-old did not hesitate to help out with this!  The owners, a husband and wife team, brought this vision from the east to our desert oasis in AZ.   

The menu has many options of fresh fish that are flown in weekly and cooked to perfection.  There is quite a list of unique and mouth-watering fish not common to AZ which is awesome.  The fish can be grilled or fried.   You have a choice of how you would like your fish served such as taco style, salad or a dinner plate with sides.   They have many appetizers to choose from as well.  The owner explained the menu which really helped with deciding what to order. 

We decided to split the sea bass and red snapper with steamed clams to kick it off.  The clams were perfectly cooked in a silky-smooth delicious broth.  Our 7-year-old is the clam pro and, judging by his ear-to-ear smile upon the first bite, we knew it was good!  We had our fish blackened on the grill.  It was awesome and had the perfect amount of spice and seasoning all while enhancing the flavor and texture of the moist cuts of fish.  We had corn, a beautifully presented side salad and house-made coleslaw.   It was all very good!  They were sold out of crab cakes at the time, which is a favorite of ours and what most people were raving about on Facebook.  We figured the crab must be delicious if it was sold out!

During these times of quarantine, social distancing, and online school, it's very easy for parents and children to lose patience more quickly than normal. Being stuck inside can become mentally exhausting and physically deteriorating. OMG we are dealing with teeth! Baby teeth falling out, new teeth coming in, check-ups every 6 months, grinding and the tough task of explaining over and over to our 6 year old that he has to start breaking the habit of thumb sucking or braces will for sure be in his future.

You’d think, since we are dealing with all things teeth frequently, that my son would do everything to avoid the dentist like most kids do. Not this kid! Thankfully we go to Advanced Dental Health here in Ahwatukee and it’s family friendly with a fun, light-hearted staff. He loves Shelly at the front desk and her box of prizes that he gets to choose from before leaving and he often talks about April, his “doctor”, whenever we drive by. It’s really cute and makes my mama heart happy that he’s not scared to death of going and actually enjoys it.

I heard about Advanced Dental Health by word of mouth and was immediately attracted to the family friendly atmosphere and the focus on anxiety free dental care. My husband had quite a bit of unpleasant dental work as a child and honestly avoided visits for a few years as an adult because of it. I was especially glad to know that this dental office is sensitive to those with similar anxieties.

I’ve been impressed over the years with their technology. I just recently went in to be fitted for a mouth guard because I’m a nighttime grinder. I was expecting to have to bite into all that goop and even wore a shirt that I didn’t mind getting messy because of it. It was a pleasant surprise when they scanned my mouth instead of the goop. It was quick and clean.

And they didn’t mind that my very inquisitive child was in the room with me. I highly recommend this Ahwatukee dentist office especially for families!
